Article 2
After years of exploring Ontario's small towns, I have overdosed on bed-and-breakfasts. With more than a lifetime's worth of mega-sweet breakfasts and talkative hostesses to my credit, Piebird Bed and Breakfast was defiantly an exception.
When friends recommended Piebird, in Nipissing Ontario, I resisted. They pressed on, insisting that to call it a bed-and-breakfast was a misnomer. It was actually a very unique combination of a luxurious century-old house mixed with a rustic country cottage, set amongst farmland and forest.
On our first night , I sat by the fire in the parlor and read over a drink, then I took a fiercely hot bath in the 1870’s oak rimmed tub before bed. I was simply overcome by the beauty of the house, every rooms is ornately covered, wall and ceiling, with the original embossed copper and tin.
The next morning, we decided to savor breakfast as long as we could, especially since we could now see the silvery sheet of early morning fog lift off the river and retreat across the field.
A large, white clapboard and green cedar shingle house with large gables that take up each side of the house, prefaced by a veranda that stretches across the whole front, it was sometime between 1900 and 1902 by the Kahnert family of Toronto. The prosperous purveyors of Kahnert Furs, Waldimer and his wife retreated every summer to Nipissing and the relaxed away from town.
The Piebird house was roomy and summer-cottage casual. The current owners, Sherry and Yan, have made it grander but not intimidating, furnishing the public rooms with an artful splash of antiques, books, and their own art.
My room, painted a yolky yellow, was furnished in an unexpectedly congenial blend of stripes, plaids and chintzes, in beiges and non-saccharine pastels. The floorboards are wide and pine, and the furniture is another unusual mixture -- countrified and Deco pieces. Each of the four rooms hails from a different sensibility: With no television or telephone to interfere with a good book and a long sleep, I settled down between hand-ironed cotton sheets for a dreamless night.
